It’s here!! It’s finished!!

I usually meet my UPS delivery guys at the door so they know the dog is all bark and would never hurt anyone.  Today, I met the guy half way up the driveway cause I was so excited about what he was bringing me!!

My latest book is back from the printer!  Yeah!

I saw the pages in December for final editing, so the layout and design is not a surprise, but its still a very exciting moment to have all the pages in a complete form.

Here’s some peeks:

So exciting!  I hope you look for it and love it too!  Order here from Kalmbach for the quickest delivery!

Changes

There have been a lot of changes here at Patricia Kimle Designs…  Obviously, if you’ve ever read this blog before, you will notice that it’s not just a blog, but a full blown website now.  And it’s under my own domain, which means I took the old kimledesigns site down.  After much consideration and personal debate, I also took down the precioustext.com site.  I’ve long known that they weren’t well designed sites, and coupled with my all-thumbs approach to webdesign and maintenance with the fact they weren’t generating interest, I decided to pull the plug..  So please checkout the galleries.  I only put up a small selection of items, but with the ease of these pages here at wordpress, I’m hoping to rotate things often.

The other big change is that I finished the manuscript for my next book and sent all the materials to Kalmbach Books a week ago.  (4 days early, I might add!!)  Here’s a few of my favorite caned projects from both the instructional and the gallery images.

The book covers polymer clay basics, and design elements of color and pattern in Part one.  Part two is the basic canes of stripe, checkerboard, bull’s-eye, and spiral.  Part three covers complex canes.

After all the projects were designed and written, I did a few more projects for a gallery of designs going for “glam” and star power yet maintaining the use of canes that were very simple.  Elegance was my goal…

Have a great weekend.  This time, I promise to, and really will, see you again soon!

Blessings,

deadline approaching

I’m bleary-eyed.  I’ve been working with tons of images, matching raw and jpg files and naming them according to protocol for my publisher.  One more chapter’s worth of files to name, then the rest of the writing….

What am I writing this time?  A beginner polymer clay book focused on the technique of caning.  I have been working on it for a couple of months and I have just a few weeks to go before my manuscript deadline.

Want a peek?  This is my table in the midst of some of the cane assembly and photography:

This book has been an interesting and fun challenge for me.  I’ve had to keep “beginner” in mind, yet I wanted the canes and the finished jewelry and beads to maintain a high standard of good design and excellent technical detail and finish.

Here’s another peek.  This drawer contains many of the canes I made for the book.  The first part of the book is very simple, basic canes, the second half is more complex canes and combinations of the basics.

Ok.  Time to go back to my bleary task of file naming.   BKS–64506-….I’m gonna be typing this code in my sleep!!

Blessings,

Patti

And the winner is…

We had 21 entries from comments in the book drawing.  This morning my husband pulled a name out of the bowl and the winner is TLCCreates.  Congrats Terry!

Thanks for playing everyone!  Stay tuned for more fun and excitement.

Have a great weekend!

Patti

My turn for a give-away!!

I got my big box of author copies this weekend!!  So even though Lisa beat me to it, I’m going to hold a give-away of a signed copy of my book! Leave a comment to be entered!  Tell your polymer and metal clay friends!   I’ll choose a winner Saturday 3/27.

{I also decided to do this today because my computer was infected with a lovely virus over the weekend, so I’m temporarily hooked up on one of my hubby’s old (and very cranky) laptops.  So, no new pics until I get my machine back…  I’m hoping that the virus didn’t chew up data, but I don’t know the damage yet.  Cross your fingers with me?}

Have a great week,

Patti

Student and reader feedback

One of the great things about teaching is seeing what students come up with as they synthesize the information I present and express it with their own artistic voice.  In the old days, that teacher gratification came only during the class if the students were able to complete something during the class.  Now, with the blogosphere, I can get feedback beyond the class, as well as feedback from those who’ve only met me through the pages of my books.

That’s so cool!

Here’s what one of my Indy students told me:  “It was an eye opening learning experience and really will change the way I do some things.  The two days were a creative kick in the butt and something I occasionally need to get the mojo going again.  So, a big THANK YOU!”

Go check out what Lisa at Polka Dot Cottage did.  My editor sent her more copies than I got so far, (how’d that happen, Karin??!!) so she’s beating me to the “give away” punchline.

learning and teaching

They always say the best teachers always keep learning.   I hope I embody such a value.  I know I learned a lot of tips and tricks from my students last week.  One thing that certainly facilitates learning both ways is when the students and the teacher come from different perspectives.

My students last week are all accomplished in the areas of lampwork glass and metal.  Polymer clay was a mostly new world for them.   So it was easy to present a perspective that shifts the understanding of what is possible in clay.

I learned a few things about tools from my host, who gets teased a bit about having one of Everything!!  But it’s likely a bit of envy, too.  Anyway, I’m quite busy with some new ventures, but in the back of my mind, I’m thinking about how I can make my small studio space more efficient and effective.  Some spring cleaning and organizing would be a good place to start, but I think I’ve got some larger issues to tackle as well…. hmm… anybody have good studio tips for me?

Hope you are all having a good day,

Patti

It’s here! It’s here!

I arrived home this afternoon from Indianapolis to find my advance copy of the book on my desk.  I’ve been expecting it and I’m just sorry I couldn’t take it with me to the workshop.

Anyway, It’s beautiful, if I do say so myself!  I really want to thank my editor, Karin Buckingham, and all the great people at Kalmbach Books who did a wonderful job.  I’ve always felt that they produced some of the best looking books in the craft market.  Now I have to say it’s true!

So, for all who have pre-ordered, hang in there, it should be coming soon!

Have an awesome weekend, everyone!

Off to the Hoosier state

I’m off this week to teach a workshop in Indianapolis.  Its a private appearance of my class Perfect Couple:  polymer and metal clay jewelry designs. (That’s actually what my initial book title was, before it became Perfectly Paired.)

So I’ll see you all next week, hopefully with some new stories.  And if you aren’t one of the three lovely ladies in class this week, check out the Bead & Button Show, maybe we can catch each other there!

Have a great week.  I plan to!!

Patti

It’s finished!

I’m pleased to announce that my second book has gone to press.  Perfectly Paired:  Designing Jewelry with Polymer and Metal Clays will be released in April by Kalmbach Books.

The good folks at Kalmbach also publish Bead & Button magazine, Art Jewelry magazine, and sponsor the Bead & Button Show in Milwaukee in June.  I’ll be teaching there again, several classes that relate directly to the subject of the book!
